Fiduciary/Benefits Advocacy/Care Management

Harbor

Welcome to summer!  We are delighted to be a part of the 6th Annual Conference on Elder Abuse hosted by Legal Assistance for Seniors (LAS).  We feel strongly that the more we know and learn about the needs of our seniors, the better able we are to assist them in living their best possible life.  Personalizing their service could include assisting them with day-to-day bill paying or advocating for Medi-Cal benefits.   It has been our experience that the LAS conference offers an excellent opportunity to learn from leading experts.  This year we hope you will join us in discussing and considering solutions to the serious and important issue of elder abuse.

There is still time to register.  We look forward to seeing you at breakfast on Monday, June 20th at 8 a.m. sharp!

What's so "special" about a Special Needs Trust?

Understanding how to maximize financial benefits

Herb ThomasWhether your child or other family member was recently diagnosed or has been living with a disability for many years, it is critical that every member of your family be involved in a strategy that will help ensure his or her lifetime financial security.

A Special Needs Trust is a special type of trust that can hold assets for and distribute payments for a disabled beneficiary, while at the same time preventing him or her from being disqualified from receiving government benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medi-Cal.   Although the disabled person is named as the beneficiary of the trust, the assets are not counted as his or her "available resources" because the assets are not within his or her "control."  For example, a child with Autism can have millions of dollars in a Special Needs Trust, and still qualify for SSI and Medi-Cal.

Understanding and setting up a Special Needs Trust may seem daunting and can actually be complicated  - but you don't have to do it alone.

Herb Thomas and Associates has created a turnkey solution of multi-disciplined professionals to provide you with the support and guidance you'll need to make the complex decisions involved in providing a secure future for your child.  Our team includes:

  •  An attorney with expertise in disability law and estate planning
  •  A dedicated Financial Advisory Group focused on serving families with disabilities
  • Disability professionals or representatives from a third-party disability organization
  • Regional Center expert advocates
  • Government benefits specialists
  • Medical professionals with knowledge of your specific disability
  • Tax advisors or Certified Public Accountants (CPA)
  • Compassionate Trusteeship

Our team of specialists can offer insight to help you assess your situation and clarify your particular needs. By working with us, we can help you achieve a long-term, goal-oriented strategy.

Feelings of isolation linked to health issues for seniors

Home Care Logo

A University of Chicago study reveals "the relationship between social disconnectedness and mental health appears to operate through feelings of loneliness and a perceived lack of social support," says study coauthor Linda Waite.  Implications, cited by Jenny Leonard in the March 2009 issue of Futurity, are that older adults who can adjust to being alone appear to have fewer health problems than those who feel lonely and disconnected, regardless of their actual levels of connectedness.

If you or someone you know seem to be withdrawing from social interactions or are simply unable to get out and about, Herb Thomas Home Care can help.

Herb Thomas Home Care provides non-medical services that assist individuals in leading dignified and independent lives in the comfort and safety of their own homes or in their current living environment.  In addition, to standard home care, we provide companionship and linkages to ensure the necessary social interaction for optimum health and well-being.

Herb Thomas Home Care provides a unique all-in-one service to residents of the greater Bay Area. We are committed to providing quality, ethical and professional services.  We are bonded, have third party liability insurance, and are covered by the Worker's Compensation Board. Our Home Care Assistants are carefully screened (including rigorous criminal record checks) and trained.

Assistance is available around the clock, seven days per week. The services we provide are varied and include personal care, companionship, light housekeeping, and respite care. In addition, we offer free, in-home needs assessments, client-endorsed referrals, and custom-designed payment plans. A more thorough listing of our services is outlined on our website.

We are problem solvers! Call us to discuss your specific need. If you would like to obtain more information, arrange for services, or make a referral, please feel free to contact us at your convenience.

A number of factors distinguish us from other private fiduciary firms, such as our breadth and depth of services and the regular personal contact we have with our clients. In addition, we have extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of finance, benefits advocacy, taxes, and investments.

We look forward to discussing any of our services with you.  Contact us anytime for statewide service: 510-749-8358 or herb@herbthomas.com.
